The general perception was that the quality of new cars was okay, but the durability quality was poor. However, in the U.S. J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study (42), which is commonly cited in automobile quality, Hyundai fell to 18th place in 2012 and has been in the top eight since 2014. Kia, which had been stably at the bottom before 2012, has risen to 2-1-1 since 2015, and in 2018, Hyundai Motor Group’s three brands ranked first to third.

However, in the same J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), which was conducted three years after its release, Hyundai fell below 20th place between 2013 and 2016, and continues to be ranked lower than its IQS ranking in the year of release. Taken together, this means that compared to new cars, more defects occur over time. Hunger, which shares the basic design, also has a similar tendency. However, both Hyundai and Kia have improved their initial quality within the top 10 in IQS since 2014, and if these new cars rank similar in VDS three years after their release, it can be said that the long-term durability of Hyundai cars has improved. First of all, the 2017-18 VDS, which targets new cars in 2014-15, showed significant improvement to 6th and 7th places, respectively. Genesis, which was counted as an independent brand for the first time in VDS in 2020, topped the list, but Hyundai and Kia fell slightly. The 2021-22 VDS, which targets new cars at the peak of IQS performance, seemed to be a touchstone.

In 2021, VDS achieved remarkable results, with Hyundai Motor ranked third after Kia, No. 1 among popular car brands, and Toyota, No. 2 among all brands, ranking seventh. Lexus is in first place overall.

However, in the APEAL (Automatic Performance, Execution and Layout) survey, which investigates the satisfaction of buyers separately from breakdowns, there are ups and downs every year, but they have not yet received very good reviews. In 2018, Genesis topped Porsche by a narrow margin, but Hyundai ranked 26th with a lower figure than the average of public cars due to the reaction. Considering that Genesis and Equus were removed after ranking second among public cars in 2015, it fell sharply. First of all, in 2020, large-scale new cars have risen above the industrial average.
